Hi there !

Here's a tutorial explaining the way I take my rats photos, I hope it can be useful to people who would like to take photos of their pets but don't know how to create a "mini-studio".

This is the basic way to take some nice pictures. However you can add some light surfaces (such as white paper, aluminium foil, etc...) to make reflectors to improve the lighting of the scene, use better lightsources, etc...
This tutorial only shows the basic mini-studio anyone can do using a towel, desklamp, chair and other stuff that can be found in every house.

Do not hesitate to ask me if you have any question. I'll try to improve the tutorial as best as I can.

Thank you!

This tutorial is ©Diane Özdamar - 2010

If you use it, I'd love to see the result:aww:
:+fav: and comments are very much appreciated :)

Have you ever worked with rats that were not used to being outside of their protective home? I have a rat here who is very tame, but he is not very keen on being anywhere outside of his cage other than on someone's lap. He gets panicky and tries to find a way back. His favourite treat didn't seem to work either. :(

Thanks. A very informative tutorial. I'll certainly use this at some point (perhaps on the next batch of rats ;P ) but I guess I'll need a colour lamp. Can you get similar results with a digital camera? Mine is a 12mp Samsung ES28 which was all I could afford.

I'll have to keep this in mind. I've been meaning to try to take some more professional looking photos of my rats.
Do you take your rat out and play with it first to get out some of that extra energy? My rats are insane when I try to take photos. Mostly trying to play with the camera, and trying to make me pick them up. They never seem interested in the set itself, even with their favorite treat.
They love me too much. Haha

By the way I really love your gallery. I just received your 2011 rat calendar, amazing quality. It is so hard to find rat related things. I really hope that some day rats are treated with as much respect as a cat or dog... They have such a bad reputation, and it is so hard to convince people otherwise, even if you tell them all the amazing facts. =(

I'm trying this out, but can you tell me how to turn off the flash? I don't want to hurt my rat's eyes! :)
rontufox Featured By Owner Dec 7, 2010
Okay, here's what I did with your editing advice --->[link] . It was a spontaneous shot, so the set up isn't amazing, but the editing helped make it look 10x better than the original photo. Thanks!
rontufox Featured By Owner Dec 6, 2010
Thanks so much for this! I've had photoshop for so long, but I didn't know quite how to work it to its full potential. I'm definitely gonna try this on one of my rat photos. I'll give you a link when I'm done =)

OMG.. thank you SOOOOO much for posting this! This tutorial is exactly what I've been looking for. Can't wait to try these tips with my rats and see the results. The editing section is especially helpful, as I'm not very confident in photoshop but this is so easy to follow and will hopefully help me improve my editing a LOT. Thanks HEAPS! :D
